Chanuka Wrap-Up

We’ve reached the end of Chanuka and I hope your holiday was happy, meaningful and full of good eating. I’m all blogged-out, but here are a few items of interest:

  • Over at The Jew and the Carrot, there’s a post on the origin of Sufganiot and some surprising etymology:

In fact, these early Zionists termed the doughnut a Sufgania which comes from the Greek word, sufgan, meaning flaccid and oily. Thus, the dessert that we eat to remember our victory over Greek enemies who forced their cultural ways upon us and forced us to abandon our own rituals is Greek in origin and name.

  • You might have seen the news about a grocery in New York labeling ham as “Delicious for Chanuka”.
  • I’m a kitchen-gadget-maniac, as anyone who’s been to my kitchen will confirm. I was hoping to have my latest acquisition up and running for Chanuka, but it wasn’t meant to be:
    automatic donut maker
That’s right, I purchased an automatic donut maker. (I had to! This device has been blogged about all over the place, but it seems that no one has ever reported seeing one in operation.) Unfortunately, it arrived without any instructions in the box. I tried to get it running, but my results were less than stellar. I promise a follow-up post when it starts churning out donuts.

I guess it’s time to start working on our Tu B’Shvat coverage….

Interesting donut maker. My friend got the very large version. http://adw3345.livejournal.com/19171.html
