Around this time last year, we “reported” on a peculiar new symbol from the OU, and we’ve just come upon something equally as strange:

The new Barilla product labeling seems to bear an “OU Sauce” heksher! Some new chumra we’re not familiar with?

They must have added the new notation as part of their

Eh, I didn’t think kosher consumers were confused about whether a jar of tomato sauce was in fact sauce or some other type of food? And regarding the OU-Treyf program…what food producer would agree to put a symbol on their product that instructs consumers not to purchase it?

To clarify: While OU-T was false, OU-Sauce is not. It actually is on current Barilla labels.

I wish it were a joke…

further clarification…..the OU is simply placed above the word “sauce”, which apparently is part of the label design. the non-kosher varieties of the barilla sauce have the word “sauce” in exactly the same place without an OU
