sometimes I wonder how she managed to achieve her "kosher guru" status

A good publicist?

I find more recipes than I'd like in her books that really need further kitchen testing

My favorite is the dafina recipe in The Jewish Holiday Kitchen, which calls for a "large nine-quart stockpot." Apparently, a "large nine-quart stockpot" is larger than a twelve-quart stockpot.

Aside from the occasional goof, however, I have generally been pleased with the cookbook. The children's version isn't bad, either.

To be honest, I've never been bowled over by Nathan's cookbooks. I wouldn't call any of them bad, but sometimes I wonder how she managed to achieve her "kosher guru" status. I find more recipes than I'd like in her books that really need further kitchen testing, and she has an interesting habit of writing things that rub her religious readers the wrong way.
