Kosher Cooking Guru Goes Treyf

Joan Nathan, author of Jewish Cooking in America, The Jewish Holiday Kitchen, The Children’s Jewish Holiday Kitchen, The Jewish Holiday Baker, and The Foods of Israel Today, recently came out her first non-kosher cookbook, entitled The New American Cooking. It seems to be getting pretty good reviews.

Part of the Boston Jewish Book Fair, join renowned cookbook author Joan Nathan for a fascinating culinary discussion with Boston Magazine’s Food Editor, Jane Black.

To be honest, I’ve never been bowled over by Nathan’s cookbooks. I wouldn’t call any of them bad, but sometimes I wonder how she managed to achieve her “kosher guru” status. I find more recipes than I’d like in her books that really need further kitchen testing, and she has an interesting habit of writing things that rub her religious readers the wrong way.

A good publicist?

My favorite is the dafina recipe in The Jewish Holiday Kitchen, which calls for a “large nine-quart stockpot.” Apparently, a “large nine-quart stockpot” is larger than a twelve-quart stockpot.

Aside from the occasional goof, however, I have generally been pleased with the cookbook. The children’s version isn’t bad, either.

Fundamentalists…:rolleyes
