Hilda, The French Roast is from the chuck. The reason it is expensive is because it has to be cut to make a square piece of meat, consistent in thickness, so it cooks evenly. It is the trimming which raises its price. It is also know as NY Flanken or Shell Roast, which are not as trimmed to cause a price increase.
A suggestion is to buy the whole Shell Roast, at the lower price per pound, have your butcher trim it to a French Roast and take home the trimmed pieces to use in a stew, goulash or cholent.

What exactly is a French roast? What part of the animal is it from? Why is it so expensive?

I agree with "d" and "Malkie". I ordered chicken cutlets from Maier at Specialty Provisions. I've grilled them on the BBQ and fried and breaded them too. They were absolutely delicious.
My family can't get enough! They were fresh tasting- and the quality was better than store-bought. His prices blew me away. Kosher meat and chicken that is so inexpensive. How does he do it?!

I am really pleased with Specialty Provisions.Maier is knowledgeable and accomodating. His kashruth credentials are impeccable. He gets me cuts of meat that are hard to come by, the quality is consistently good, and you can't beat his prices. He is very pleasant to deal with, and I heartily recommend his service!

I'm replying to "rico";s comments on Specialty Provisions. Yes, Maier Cywiak of Specialty Provisions is the son of Rabbi Nochum Cywiak of Boston. His kosher meat prices are the lowest prices out there. His customer service is top-notch. You do not get that kind of service, price or quality of product from any butcher, store, or on-line service. And let's not forget the delicious variety of meat and chicken products. My friends in New York and New Jersey all order from Specialty Provisions. There is always someone going to/from the Boston area. Ask your friends in MD. Then you can split the case!

If Maier Cywiak is related Rabbi N. Cywiak of the same area, you can rely on them 100%. A family of mensches they are and the custumer service above should not come as a surprise to anyone who has had contact with the family. Thank you for the list. I used to live in Boston and know the prices on kosher meat. I now live in Silver Spring, MD and things are even worse here. Do you know if Specialty Provisions delivers outside of the Boston area?

One additional note that didn't make it into the review. After buying a couple cases of bulk chicken parts, I'd probably recommend ordering retail cases -- still a large quantity, just in many manageable retail packages. Of course, you don't save as much money, but poultry is not something you want to mess around with, and a bulk case's copious juices and chunks of ice are no fun to clean up.

On a somewhat similar note, Empire is now offering online orders for their products, which will be shipped directly to you.
