Kosher Pop Tarts, almost

Nature's Path Toaster Pastries

KBlog reader David writes in to share this news:

Nature’s Path has a new line of toaster pastries that taste just like Pop Tarts — as I remember them, anyway. Got ‘em in my local (Los Angeles) Trader Joe’s.

The Nature’s Path website lists three flavors — strawberry, blueberry, and apple-cinnamon — all available frosted or unfrosted, and all OU-Dairy, USDA Organic, and free of trans-fats.

Search for retailers, or buy online.

Got another box recently, this one with a heksher from “WK” – other Nature’s Path products use this too. I don’t know if they’re switching b/t the two certifiers or what’s going on…

Nope, they’re all OU-D. My mistake.

While I wishfully had high hopes for this product and scoured NYC health food stores to find it, I must report that while these items may be natural, they are no Pop Tarts. They are sorely lacking in filling and the pastry is very dry as compared to real P.T. I have tried several letter campaigns to Kellog’s to push for kosher P.T. The filling in P.T. is Smuckers, which is OU, and the non-frosted do not contain gelatin. If Eggos can be OU, why not P.T.? Maybe with this new product on the market, it is time for a new e-mail campaign.

I must agree with Joe’s review of the product… Unfortunately not in the “Tastes Like Treyf” category.
But they’re not bad

I bought a box the week before our local ShopRite stopped carrying them. I thought the kids would like them, but no. I thought they tasted fine though.

hi, we loved this product! We were very happy to have a kosher, healthy-ish morning snack that tastes a lot like an old favorite.

My hubby preferred the non-icing type, me the iced type. We tried Apple, Strawberry, Blueberry too I think. We ate 5+ boxes in a month.

Yeah, I’m don’t even keep kosher, but I don’t eat any pork products (it makes me sick to eat), and I want kosher Pop-Tarts! Why won’t Kellogg’s just change ONE simple ingredient–some gelatin from pig! There are tons of substitutes (that’d make them taste exactly the same!)–beef gelatin, fruit pectin, even a gelatin product I saw made from bees! I’d sign any number of petitions just to have my beloved Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts again!

I just called the Kellogg’s Consumer Affairs number at 1-800-962-1413 (from a box of Pop-Tarts) and they said that all of their Pop-Tarts including the frosted ones use beef gelatin except the marshmallow one (S’mores), because their marshmallow products use Type A gelatin (pork) for a certain consistency with the marshmallow stuff, but they use Type B gelatin (beef) in their other Pop-Tarts and soon all their fruit snacks will use beef gelatin. But there are kosher marshmallows out there, too! But why do some food products not have any of the official kosher symbols even when they are okay? But even if they just straight-up lied to me, you’d have a lawsuit case and a good chance to change the gelatin anyway! LOL I’m enjoying my Pop-Tarts until otherwise!

Beef gelatin is not necessarily kosher. It is only kosher if it is made from a properly slaughtered cow which does not have any imperfections which would render it non-kosher (typically only 1/3 to 1/2 of slaughtered cows pass inspection). There is an opinion that virtually all gelatin is kosher, but that would even include pig gelatin, and most of the US kashrut organizations doesn’t follow that opinion.

Also, even if a product could be kosher based on its ingredients, it may not be labeled kosher if it is processed on machinery that was previously used for non-kosher products. Also, the manufacturer may not have any desire to pay for supervision (or may not even realize that the product could be supervised kosher).

Nature’s Path has come out with a chocolate version – which my kids said “Don’t Buy Again”. But the good news is that Costco is now selling a multi-pack of just the fruit flavors

Yeah, Joe, it’s hard to find healthy food that tastes good also. I like to bake, organic pastry. Have you ever baked with organic flour? I recommend place online, daisyflour which has decent prices and everything I bake with ingredients from there taste awesome.
