Restaurant Rumor

Heard in shul last week that an upscale kosher restaurant would be opening in Lynn, MA. I know, I know… it sounds odd. Anyone have any details to corroborate or refute the rumor?

once were talking about resturant rumors. there is one that the prime grill is opening in los angeles ca.

I heard that same rumor about a month ago. Lynn, of all places? There used to be a jewish community there, but no longer. I guess they’re depending on folks from Marblehead to frequent the place. Who knows?

I heard that there was a restaurant opening in lynn as well, the hashgacha supposedly is going to be by the Chabad rabbi there…

Greetings, the information you heard is true. I am the owner of the soon-to-be-opened glatt kosher restaurant in Lynn: the Oxford Street Grill.

The menu will be old-world style with modern american highlights, emphasizing locally-grown produce and naturally-raised meats, poultry and wild-caught fish. We will seat about 60 people.

Construction is nearly complete but we are not ready yet to announce an opening date.

We are beginning the hiring process, starting with the mashgiach. If you are interested in a full-time, career-oriented position as mashgiach and/or executive chef, please contact Lowell Gray via email to ljg (at) shore.net.

Thanks for asking about our new restaurant!

Sincerely,

- Lowell

Thank you for the replies I have received about my plans.

Unfortunately, I was too optimistic about the financial realities of running a kosher restautant. Between the added costs of having full-time supervision, the hechsher, finding quality glatt kosher meat, and the lowered revenue potential because of reduced hours of operation, it simply is not feasible.

Perhaps after I have more experience running the restaurant, I will understand better how to make it kosher and remain profitable. Until then, my apologies for abandoning the original concept.

Sincerely,

- Lowell

Lowell,

Sorry to hear it. What a shame. Sounds like it was going to be quite a resource for the community. Why did it have to be “glatt” - isn’t that superfluous?

Help! If there aren’t any nice kosher restaurants in the Boston area, where can I have my rehersal dinner for my wedding?!? I’m getting married this spring in N. Andover and I’m at a total loss. I can’t afford to rent a hall and have it catered or bring in platters and my house is too small. Please help.

Hi Ruth - we had oru rehearsal dinner at the John Hancock Conference Center with Ruth’s Kitchen for the catering. The conference center is super cheap to rent a room, it includes tables, linens and some staff, and they are SUPER nice to work with. A little tricky to find, but once you have been there you’ll wonder how you ever walked by without noticing it before. Don’t be put off by the exterior, the interior is fabulous!

For the food, Tom, who works at Ruth’s Kitchen worked with us as our “caterer” so to speak. We picked the food and he arranged for it to be prepared, hired staff, and brought it all to the location. He was very open to working within a tight budget. We did everything on paper and plastic there except the table linens which was just fine. Everyone had a good time at the buffet dinner. We also had a brunch there the morning after the wedding and Andrew did the catering there, a simple meal of bagels and eggs. So bottom line, the conference center is very good about kosher arrangements and letting caterers in without sticking you with extra fees like hotels do.

Thank you so much for your recommendation Rachel! I really appreciate the help. But unfortunately I contacted the conference center and they are looking for almost $1,000 just to rent the space! (and we’d still need to pay for food on top of that!) I was hoping to find a restaurant were we would only need to spend the price of the meal per person… I’m certainly open to other suggestions, but this one is too much for us. Thanks anyway.

I was noticing the conversation here and thought I would drop a line about my new kosher catering company. It is different and worth a trip to the website!
