US Certifiers of Kosher Slaughter Defend Schechita Practices
NEW YORK, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ — A broad coalition of rabbis and certifying agencies involved in the supervision of kosher meat slaughter in the United States has reaffirmed the humaneness of kosher slaughter (schechita) in the wake of charges by a radical animal rights group. In an unprecedented statement, uniting diverse segments of the kosher community, the 12 signatories expressed concern that the recent publicity “may lead to misconceptions about the practices depicted on the videotape [released by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals] and, more generally, about the shechita process itself.”

I think the esteemed panel of rabbis have missed the point about the trachea issue. Excision implies a cut … what was observed on the video was a pull, which would most likely result in a tear of tissue.
As for the rest, well, the statement is a well-crafted discussion of what shechita is or should be, but totally sidesteps the issues brought up regarding the specific shechita practice observed at AgriProcessors/Rubashkin.
But is it tzaar baalei chaim? According to the C Movement, it’s a no-no. See my blog for the latest
But the slaughterhouse has Nat Lewin as a lawyer. VERY knowledgeble modern O guy!
Misconception? Only a person who has lost touch with their emotions can deny what their eyes see. This is a typical knee jerk reaction by an establishment that has been co-opted and lulled into denial and compliance by a greedy corporation. The consumer is the ultimate victim here. We take our hard earned money and pay them extra for kosher and get traif in exchange. MMMM the chullent tastes sooo good!!How could it not be kosher?
