I like to know where I can purchase Molten Chocolate cake for my daughter’s birthday on Jan. 25th 2012. She wants this for her birthday. I work in midtown Manhattan and live in Middle Village, Queens. Can you tell me where I can purchase a cake similar to this one either in Manhattan or Queens. I second you on this product. I bought them month’s ago, but never had a chance to serve them at a formal meal, as I couldn’t warm them up on Shabbos. I finally served them for dessert on Purim, and they were absolutely amazing.

In general, Chantilly’s cakes are wonderful.

There is a good recipe for Fallen Chocolate Cake in the Nov/Dec 1998 issue of Cook’s Illustrated. It only takes about 15 minutes to prepare (if using microwave to melt chocolate) and another 12-13 minutes to bake. It makes 8 6-ounce ramekins or one 8-9 inch springform.

While not officially a part of my summer associate experience, several of us made a hobby of tasting and comparing warm chocolate cakes at Manhattan’s finest kosher restaurants, as they all seem to carry it as a staple on their dessert menus. Whether you order it at Le Marais, Prime Grill, Park East Grill, or Solo, you’ll be in for a treat. As for the recipe’s origin, the version of the story that I heard was that Jean-Georges Vongerichten happened upon it by accident when he undercooked a chocolate souffle and found the inside to be “molten.” Either way, it is worth attempting this on your own at least once – it is not so difficult and tastes much better coming straight from your own oven. I’m pretty sure that Stop & Shop (on Harvard St. in Brookline) sells similar cakes from their bakery, in pairs. They’re probably dairy. You can warm them in the oven or microwave.
