Kosher Artisan Sausages
Jon Klein, who’s working hard to keep kosher in Kentucky, just wrote in to tell TeamKosher about Jeff’s Gourmet in Los Angeles:
Jeff makes a wide variety of gourmet artisanal glatt sausages. These include: Smoked Chicken Apple, Chicken Cilantro, Mergez, Turkey Italian, Veal Bratwurst, Polish Thai Chicken, Borewores (South African!), Moroccan Chicken with Preserved Lemons & Olives (my favorite), Jalapeno Kosher Dogs, Sweet Italian, and Cajun Chicken.
As best I can tell, he’s the only person out there doing this kind of work. The products are terrific. He ships nationwide and I can vouch for the fact that the products arrive in excellent condition. This last matter is no small thing in kosher on-line shopping. I once received an order of meat from a website called AviGlatt that came with no ice. Oh, yes, they refused to refund my money.
Thanks for the tip, Jon. Here’s an article from the Jewish Journal of Los Angeles about Jeff and his sausages. FYI, kashrut supervision is provided by Rabbi Avraham Teichman of the Kehilla of Los Angeles. I’ll be making an order shortly! Mmm, sausage…
I discovered Jeff’s in Late 1999, and have been hooked ever since… basically, I make it out to LA about once or twice a year, and each time I bring back sausage(both for myself, and for an ever increasing list of friends who have found out abotu Jeff’s). They do ship anywhere, but the problem with that is that it costs about double to ship it as it does to buy it there. When you bring it back, they even sell you reusable ice packs and hot/cool bags to keep them frozen for the length of the flight. I know we can’t all make it out to LA, but if you know someone who is going, it might be cheaper to ask them to bring some back for you.
So when are ya goin’ out there, Bristol Bum? We need some for the draft party. I might even come to NY for it if that were the case.
Which member of my League wrote that? Because just so you know, I have about 30-40 sausages in my freezer currently.Or I could have someone import them for me in the next few weeks.
Oh my Dan, what a big freezer you’ve got!Makes me a bit suspicious coupled with the mysterious disappearance of your freshman-year roomie. With the volume of meat you import, you might as well start a franchise.I think there’re only 2 league members living outside the NY area, and the other one is a bit too far away to make it a day trip. But I can just come "rolling" in anytime I like(unless my wife says I can’t). Besides, it might be nice to see the Commish’s new house.
My sister keeps kasherhaus out in the lala, and when she comes back to Chicago, the land of "sasage" and clogged aortas, she’s always raving about Jeff’s.I’m heaidng out there next month and can’t wait to pick some up and bring ‘em back for the chevra. THose and Neshama. Thanks for the tips…
Jeff’s makes some very good sausages, and their salami is also quite good, but beware- the aged hard salami sometimes has a gas problem, probably due to incomplete salting, and I’ve had to throw out a few. I’ve never had a problem with the frozen and fresh products, however. They’re a little on the expensive side, but worth it to have interesting and distinctive food.
Ordered several hundreds of dollars worth of Passover foods from Aviglatt. The order was totally screwed up. I emailed them every day for a week, then called and spoke to someone who said that I would definitely receive a response by the next day, the latest. Here we are 10 days later and no response. Not only did I receive things I didn’t order, but I did not receive many things that I did order and many things were damaged. I will never order from them again. Their customer service is abominable. They also included a copy of my original order and did not list which items were shipped and which were not shipped, so I had to go through everything several times to figure this out. Terrible, terrible. Who needs this kind of stress especially at holiday times.
Had a similar nightmarish experience with Aviglatt when they first were in business. They shipped a meat order without ANY ice. Meat was unusable and they never responded to my requests for a refund. Guess they haven’t gotten any better over the years.
